West Australian Mountain Bike Association (WAMBA) is the state representative body for the West Australian mountain bike community.

A volunteer organisation, WAMBA works collaboratively with key stakeholders to identify, develop and sustain mountain bike experiences in Western Australia.

And also acts as a resource for clubs looking for help on trail advocacy and grants, and co-ordinates the racing calendar.

Hello Junior Mountain Bikers and Parents,

Mark Wardle here. I am writing this letter to introduce myself and the new roles created by WestCycle and WAMBA as part of the state high performance pathway for juniors in cycling. Through Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) funding, WestCycle has employed a High Performance Manager, Joe McCarthy, and three head coaches (mountain bike, track and road) for the next two years - to create, develop and oversee a pathway for juniors to be part of and attend National level events in their chosen form of cycling.

This programme is aimed at under 15-17 and under 19-23 junior riders.

I have been appointed the State Mountain Bike Coach, and as such, would like to offer any assistance in helping with junior development, or answer any questions you may have about this new and exciting programme.

The programme will offer junior riders the chance to attend camps, workshops, training sessions, and lead to selection in a State Squad and State Team for the Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) National Championships.

NEW West Australian Mountain Bike High Performance Programme

I have had quite a lot of riders and parents asking how this new programme will work and how they can become involved. Firstly, I would like to outline the programme and how it will function.
Please note that some areas of the programme are still being worked through, so final numbers and estimates will be updated as soon as they are approved.

  • The programme will be broken into two age groups: Under 15-17 and Under 19-23. Riders in the different age groups have different requirements in terms of racing, coaching and development.
  • There will be a WAMBA State Squad for both age groups, with up to 24 athletes per discipline (XCO and DHI), so approximately 48 riders per squad. There will be a mixture of male and female in each squad. Inclusion into the State Squad will be by invite only; no application form is required.
  • The WAMBA State Selection Panel will send out letters to selected junior riders inviting them to join the State Squad. The Selection Panel comprises expert riders and administrators with years of experience. All the riders invited to join the State Squad will have met the selection criteria (see below). There is no requirement to accept your position if you don't wish to join the State Squad.
  • Riders will be able to come from any club, coach or organisation. As long as they meet the selection criteria, they will be considered. You can be part of other training programmes or squads; however you will need to be free to attend all of the State Squad training.
  • State Squad fees will be approx. $300.00 per junior. What is offered for this fee is listed below.
  • The WAMBA State Team will be selected from the two 48 rider squads - it will contain 16 juniors who will represent Western Australia wearing black and gold at the MTBA National Championships, being held from 16th - 19th March 2017 in Canungra, Queensland.
  • All riders in the State Squad (but not chosen in the State Team) will be able to travel to the Nationals as well. And get the full benefits listed below.

WAMBA State Squad Selection Criteria

Please see below the selection criteria for the WAMBA State Squad set up within our High Performance environment:

U15 - U17 State Squad

  • Athletes must have a goal of selection and must accept selection into the State Team, if they are successful.

State Squad Costs & Services

There will be up to 48 riders selected in each WAMBA State Squad. These riders will be offered the below:

  • Invites to two (2) training camps, workshops and training sessions.
  • A full duty of care to the MTBA National Championships. This means, athletes are looked after by the WestCycle High Performance Manager and WAMBA State Coach; parents are not required to come if they don’t want to.
  • Access to the WAMBA State Coach and a fully managed coach service leading up to and including the National Championships.
  • Discounted State Squad uniforms.
  • Access to DSR grants for interstate travel.
  • There will be costs associated to the State Squad and the services above; however they will just be on a recuperation basis and no profit is made in this environment. State squad fees for the above services will be roughly $300.00. There will be additional costs to travel to the Nationals, and these will be advised closer to the date.

Over the coming weeks I will email you an outline of the goals and aims we will try to achieve over the coming two years, and how you can benefit from this programme.

Database of WA Junior Mountain Bikers

Currently there is no database of junior riders in Western Australia. One of the biggest issues I have heard speaking to many clubs, parents and riders is the lack of information and the means for this to get out to the juniors. Too many times I have heard after a camp, race etc that a rider missed that event as they didn't know it was on.
I would like to create a database that contains the clubs, coaches, parents and junior riders in WA - where a newsletter or email can be sent out to keep everyone updated with important information and events offered as part of the WA High Performance pathway.

If you like to be added to this database, please forward your contact details to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will forward you the form.

2016 WA Junior MTB Development Camp

Junior Development Camp 2016

Pemberton, 6th - 9th October

The first part of the high performance programme will be the Junior Development Camp that has been run in WA for the last three years. Starting as a Perth Mountain Bike Club and MTBA camp, this year it will be presented under the WestCycle/ WAMBA banner.
But all the awesome things about the camp will remain the same!

  • 4 days of riding some of the best trails in WA
  • Staying with other junior riders
  • Getting advice from great coaches and riders

I know many juniors have attended this camp in the past, and it would be great to see those riders return and new juniors attend for the first time. Last year many of the mountain bike clubs gave a reimbursement to juniors to attend this camp. Please check with your club to see if they have this option.
